Keep control of your desktop icons by putting a stop to the Desktop Cleanup Wizard

The Desktop Cleanup Wizard helps you maintain a clean desktop, free from the clutter of unused shortcuts. It keeps track of your desktop icon usage and periodically offers to remove the icons you haven't recently used. The icons aren't deleted, but are instead moved to a storage folder.

Fix PDF importing errors with this trick (QuarkXPress)

From time to time you’ll come across an error when trying to import a PDF into QuarkXPress. The error message states the PDF is an unrecognizable format. The next time you run into this error while importing a PDF, try using the operation File > Get Picture (File > Import Picture in version 7). Apparently the popular [command]E ([Ctrl]E in Windows) method for importing images causes this issue. It isn’t a guarantee, but it’s worth a try when you run into this error.

Streamline your XML Schema with substitution groups

Creating reusable content models is an important part of Schema design. Substitution groups provide one method to streamline your Schema and add flexibility to your model. They consist of a head element and one or more member elements. Any place the head element is referenced in your Schema, the member elements can be substituted for it. In fact, the head may be set simply as a placeholder as we'll see below.

Quickly lighten or darken your images using the Levels command (CS2/CS3/CS4/CS5)

The Photoshop Levels command creates a lot of unnecessary anxiety in many users. The reality is that you don’t have to fully understand everything about it to reap its benefits. For example, have you ever had to lighten or darken an image? Well, a simple way to do this is to adjust the image’s Input Levels. To see how it works, open an image in Photoshop. Next, press [command]L ([Ctrl]L in Windows) to access the Levels dialog box. To lighten the image, drag the white Input Levels slider toward the left. To darken the image, drag the black Input Levels slider toward the left.

When opening a child window, keep track of it with a window id (JavaScript 1.3)

We're all probably quite familiar with pop-up windows. In the Internet world, pop-up windows are usually advertising links to larger sites. Although, pop-up windows can have a greater purpose. Typically, when launched from a Web application form, they're used to gather information and return it to the parent form. Unfortunately, if this is the case and the user accidentally closes the parent window before the child window, the client produces errors such as, "Access is denied."

Sorting stored procedures by Create Date in Enterprise Manager may not work! (SQL Server 2000)

Here's a puzzler that's just come to our attention: Open up Enterprise Manager (EM), drill down to a database on your SQL Server, and select the Tables node. Now, in the right panel, try sorting the list of tables in ascending and descending order. Works just fine, right? But now select the Stored Procedures node and try the same thing. Look closely. If your system is like ours, it simply doesn't work at all! Despite the fact that EM claims to be sorting by the Create Date column, we noticed that the dates are all out of order! And the same is true for Views. And User Defined Functions. And Rules.

Take proper steps to secure your keychains (Mac OS X 10.3)

By default, your keychain password is the same as your login account's password, meaning your keychain is automatically unlocked when you log in. If someone discovers your login credentials, they have access to all the items in your keychain. To secure your keychain, you should change its password so that it's different from your login account password. Doing so keeps your keychain locked on login, requiring the keychain password to unlock it.

Edit your shared border files directly (FrontPage 2003)

It's sometimes easier to edit a shared border directly than it is to edit it within the context of a normal page. The only trick lies in accessing the hidden _borders folder. To do so, choose Web Settings from the Tools menu. Switch to the Advanced tab, enable the Show Hidden Files And Folders or Show Documents In Hidden Directories check box and click OK. Now, open the _borders folder in Folders view. You'll find up to four files, whose names correspond with their page positions: top.htm, left.htm, right.htm, and/or bottom.htm.
