Balance ragged headlines automatically (InDesign CS2/CS3/CS4)

You can insert a soft return where you want to force a headline to break, but that isn’t very efficient. Not when you can use the Balance Ragged Lines command in InDesign. It enables you to automatically balance multi-line headings, pull quotes, and other centered paragraphs.

To balance a single ragged headline:
  1. Click the Type tool in the headline.
  2. Choose Balance Ragged Lines from the Control panel while in Paragraph Formatting mode or from the Paragraph panel’s pop-up menu. InDesign automatically determines where the line should break and balances the headline without a special character.
To balance headlines formatted with a style:
  1. Double-click on the style used to format the headlines in the Paragraph Styles panel.
  2. Click on Indents And Spacing in the Paragraph Style Options dialog box.
  3. Select the Balance Ragged Lines check box.
  4. Click OK.
All the headlines in your document formatted with the style are automatically adjusted.
