Disable hyperlinks as you type (Excel 2003/2007)

When you′re storing email addresses or web addresses in a spreadsheet, Excel often changes them to hyperlinks as you type. This way, you can follow the link or open your email just by clicking the hyperlink. But when you don′t want to open an Internet browser, it′s frustrating when you′re constantly clicking on the links unintentionally. Fortunately, you can disable this option and ensure that Excel leaves your URLs and email addresses as text.

To disable automatic hyperlinks:

  1. Launch Excel and choose Tools | AutoCorrect Options from the menu bar to access the AutoCorrect dialog box.
  2. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  3. Deselect the Internet And Network Paths With Hyperlinks check box and click OK to apply the change.
To disable automatic hyperlinks in Excel 2007, click the Office button and then click the Excel Options button. In the Excel Options window, select Proofing in the left panel. Click the AutoCorrect Options button to open the same AutoCorrect dialog box you remember from earlier versions.
