Crop to Artboard in Adobe Illustrator CS5

Wasn’t it nice in Illustrator Creative Suite (CS)4 when you could create a graphic on your artboard, choose Save for Web, and the export area was automatically trimmed to fit the artwork exactly? You can still do this in CS5—a few different ways, in fact—but only one method renders the process automatic.

To manually crop a graphic to the artboard:

  1. Double click the Artboard tool and,
  2. in the Artboard Options Preset popup menu, select Fit Artboard to Selected Art.
To use a keyboard shortcut to crop a graphic to the artboard:
  1. Choose Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts
  2. Create a custom keyboard shortcut in the resulting dialog box.
To automatically crop a graphic to the artboard:
  1. Choose File > Save for Web.
  2. Click the Image Size tab and deselect the Crop to Artboard checkbox.
  3. Click Save.
