Stretch your homepage title tag for SEO results

Most developers favor keeping title tags short for most web pages. This is because the major search engines only display up to 66 characters (including spaces) in their search results. Some experts suggest this rule can and should be broken for the site’s homepage, because the content of the homepage and its ability to be found is more important.

Keep in mind that if you must have your company name in the title tags, put it at the end. The business name probably won’t get many direct searches unless your company is a major brand or a household name. For example, “Mister SEO Inc- local search help, mobile ads and smart phone apps” makes inefficient use of 66 characters. In contrast, “Local search boosting, mobile advertising and smart phone apps | Mister SEO Inc” allows users to see that you have what they’re looking for, and tells search engines that your content is relevant to the user’s search.
